sexual assault prevention tips guaranteed to work! [Sep. 22nd, 2009|08:47 pm]

(courtesy of www.thefword.org.uk...)

Please distribute this list. Put it up in your place of work, in your university’s library or wherever you think they might be read:

1. Don’t put drugs in people’s drinks in order to control their behavior.

2. When you see someone walking by themselves, leave them alone!

3. If you pull over to help someone with car problems, remember not to assault them!

4. NEVER open an unlocked door or window uninvited.

5. If you are in an elevator and someone else gets in, DON’T ASSAULT THEM!

6. Remember, people go to laundry to do their laundry, do not attempt to molest someone who is alone in a laundry room.

7. USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM! If you are not able to stop yourself from assaulting people, ask a friend to stay with you while you are in public.

8. Always be honest with people! Don’t pretend to be a caring friend in order to gain the trust of someone you want to assault. Consider telling them you plan to assault them. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the other person may take that as a sign that you do not plan to rape them.

9. Don’t forget: you can’t have sex with someone unless they are awake!

10. Carry a whistle! If you are worried you might assault someone “on accident” you can hand it to the person you are with, so they can blow it if you do.

Have you ever participated in a boycott? What did you boycott and why?

View 527 Answers

I have, for around 16 years (3rd year at school, approx) refused to buy any Nestle product or product of a company owned by Nestle.

The full details of the campaign are here: http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/boycott.html

- but in a nutshell it's this.  Aggressive and misleading promotion of formula milk over breast milk, particularly in developing countries, which has led to the malnutrition and death of many children.

After 16 years it's become second nature not to buy anything marked Nestle.  What can be more difficult is weeding out the products that are made by Nestle-owned companies but not marked as Nestle: L'Oreal, for example, are Nestle-owned.  As are The Body Shop these days.  (which even Ms Roddick seems to have been aware of, see here: http://www.babymilkaction.org/update/update38.html#27)  So a list like this comes in useful: http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/products.html

I only buy happy chicken too, and free-range eggs.  I get a fair amount of stick for that one actually, which just disappoints me.  If you're going to eat something take responsibility for its life and its death.  I'm a carnivore and I'm going to stay that way: to shy away from how our food is produced is irresponsible.  I don't understand, for example, the people on food reality shows who won't go into the abbatoir.  Stop being a fucking coward and face up to the impact that you have.  It probably will make you queasy, get over it.  But it's not the strength of your stomach in which i'm interested as much as that of your convictions.

What you put in your basket does make a difference.  What you don't makes even more.

ipod is syncing [Sep. 30th, 2008|11:43 am]
...currently on 800 of nearly 5000 songs.

this could take a while.

also, it's refusing to copy my old work music to my home puter.  for no good reason.  it plays fine if i have the external HD plugged in, and i've consolidated the library, but when you unplug the external HD it says that it can't find the file.  but i just moved the file!  for that reason! manually moving stuff over creates double versions of everything, but then if i unplug the external HD it won't play either version.

stupidcomputeritunesbollockssulksulksulk. *kicks chair* *pout*

will make do for now with moving everything onto my shiny shny ipod, and deal with it later.  this HD is on its last legs, not wanting to rely on it...

sigh.

1500 of 5000

and only 30 rejects so far.

23 - George Orwell / Down and out in Paris and London

i like orwell. read a bit of his work at school and felt all cultured and that cos i'd read 'Coming Up For Air'. his writing tends toward the didactic at times but i can stand that.

today i used my birthday Borders vouchers (cheers wolf & lisa!) to buy big classic tomes that i wouldn't otherwise get - Don Quioxte (Cervantes), Casanova, & Alisdair Gray's Lanark. The latter of which isn't as tome-y as the other two but is still one of those that i've never quite got round to reading... looking forward to this :)
